The Detroit Lions are coming off one of their most successful seasons in franchise history, but there’s always room for improvement. According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), the ideal offseason scenario for the Lions focuses on beefing up their pass rush and secondary—two key areas that could push them even closer to a Super Bowl run.
PFF’s Dream Scenario for the Lions
PFF envisions the Lions making two major moves to upgrade their defense:
Free-Agent Signing: EDGE Khalil Mack
Why Mack? Even at 35, he remains a dominant force, earning back-to-back 90+ PFF grades.
The Fit: The Lions need depth on the edge, especially with Aidan Hutchinson dealing with injuries. Mack’s veteran leadership and pass-rushing prowess could be a game-changer.
First-Round Draft Pick: CB Benjamin Morrison (Notre Dame)
Why Morrison? Before a hip injury, he was considered one of the top cornerback prospects, known for his elite man-coverage skills.
The Fit: With Carlton Davis III potentially out, Morrison would step in as a perfect fit for the Lions’ aggressive Cover 1 scheme.
Why This Plan Works
Adding Mack to the pass rush and Morrison to the secondary would give the Lions two much-needed upgrades, addressing their biggest defensive weaknesses. A strong pass rush makes life easier for the secondary, and a reliable cornerback like Morrison would allow Detroit’s defense to play more aggressively.
A Different Dream?
While PFF’s plan is solid, some fans (myself included) might have a different vision for the Lions’ perfect offseason. If I had my way, I’d push for a blockbuster trade for Myles Garrett—one of the most dominant edge rushers in the league. Pairing him with Hutchinson would create an elite pass-rushing duo that could terrorize quarterbacks for years.
Then, with the No. 28 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, I’d target an interior offensive lineman to further solidify protection for Jared Goff and bolster the run game. Keeping the offense strong is just as important as fixing the defense, and a top-tier guard or center would ensure Detroit remains dominant in the trenches.
