Former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is settling into his new role as head coach of the Chicago Bears, but he may have already fired up his old team without even realizing it. During his first press conference at the 2025 NFL Combine, Johnson spoke about working with new Bears quarterback Caleb Williams—and let’s just say, his comments didn’t sit well with some in Detroit.
Johnson was hyping up Williams’ ability to create plays outside of structure, something he sees as crucial in today’s NFL. But then he added this:
“That’s what gets me going a little bit. I get excited thinking about that because I haven’t really been around that since I’ve been in the league. But I’ve been on the other side, and I have experienced it, and it’s demoralizing when you’re on the other side, and you’re watching that happen to your defense.”
Wait… what? Did Johnson just imply he hasn’t worked with a quarterback who can extend plays like that? Because last we checked, Jared Goff did just fine under his play-calling. And did he really say he’s been on the “other side” watching defenses get torched like that? Well, that sure sounds like he’s talking about the Lions’ defense.
Naturally, the comments made their way back to Detroit, and Lions safety Kerby Joseph wasn’t about to let them slide. He responded on Twitter with a pair of photos, letting his feelings be known. Cornerback Amik Robertson chimed in too, making it clear the Lions’ secondary heard every word.
Was this an intentional shot at the Lions? Probably not. But you better believe Detroit’s defense will have a little extra motivation when they see Johnson’s Bears twice next season.
