Bears Coach Ben Johnson Takes Another Shot at Lions’ Jared Goff

Ben Johnson Keeps Taking Shots at Lions’ Jared Goff at NFL Combine
Former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson hasn’t been shy about stirring the pot since taking the Chicago Bears’ head coaching job—and his latest comments at the NFL Combine are only adding to the tension.

In a conversation with Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio and Chris Simms, Johnson made a remark comparing Penei Sewell’s throws in practice to those of Lions quarterback Jared Goff:

“The best part of that was he threw a dime every single time in practice. We probably took that for three weeks and every time it was a dime. It was better than some other people—Jared Goff. He was pretty darn good at throwing on the move.”

While Johnson may have meant it as a joke, the timing was suspect. It came just a day after he implied that Caleb Williams—presumed to be the Bears’ future franchise QB—would be the first quarterback he’s coached who can succeed off-schedule.

Lions fans were already fired up over Johnson’s sudden departure to a division rival. Now, he seems to be handing Detroit even more motivation heading into the 2025 season. The Lions have won five of their last six games against the Bears, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Goff & Co. are ready to make a statement when they meet again.
