Trey Benson Could Be Key to Unlocking Arizona Cardinals’ Run Game
The Arizona Cardinals are hoping for a breakout season from Trey Benson, who could form a dynamic backfield duo with James Conner. Arizona’s head coach Jonathan Gannon expects Benson to take a significant leap in his second year, giving the Cardinals two starting-caliber running backs, much like the Detroit Lions’ successful Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery tandem.
Benson, a rookie in 2024, had a shaky start but showed improvement before an ankle injury sidelined him for the final three games. Despite limited touches—only twice surpassing 10 carries—he finished with 291 yards and a touchdown. If he can elevate his game, he could complement Conner, who’s coming off a 1,000-yard season, and further bolster the team’s seventh-ranked rushing attack from last season.
The Cardinals believe Benson has the tools to take some pressure off Conner, especially in the passing game, creating a two-back system that could change the course of Arizona’s offense for years to come.
