Steelers, Najee Harris’ Agent Meet at Combine to Discuss Potential Deal

Pittsburgh keeps the door open for a possible reunion with their former first-round pick

The Pittsburgh Steelers are keeping their options open when it comes to running back Najee Harris. While the team previously declined his fifth-year option, discussions about his future remain active.

According to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Gerry Dulac, general manager Omar Khan has met with Harris’ agent, Doug Hendrickson, at the NFL Combine to explore the possibility of a long-term deal.

“General manager Omar Khan has met with Doug Hendrickson of Wasserman Sports, Harris’ representative, about the possibility of re-signing their former No. 1 draft choice, who is an unrestricted free agent,” Dulac wrote.

Harris’ Free Agency Outlook

Harris appeared destined for the open market after Pittsburgh opted not to exercise his fifth-year option last May. Statistically, he delivered a familiar season in 2024, rushing for 1,000 yards while averaging under 4.0 yards per carry. However, the Steelers’ running game struggled late in the year, contributing to a five-game losing streak. During that stretch, Harris failed to eclipse 100 yards in any game and was held under 50 yards in four contests.

Despite those struggles, Harris remains a durable and reliable back. Over his four-year career, he has yet to miss a game and has fumbled only six times on nearly 1,100 carries. That kind of ball security and availability makes him an attractive option in free agency.

Mike Tomlin’s Influence

One factor working in Harris’ favor is the reported support of head coach Mike Tomlin. Dulac previously noted that Tomlin values Harris’ toughness, durability, and overall productivity.

“Harris appears to have the support of coach Mike Tomlin, who likes his toughness, durability and productivity,” Dulac reported.

If Tomlin’s voice carries weight in personnel decisions, it could improve Harris’ chances of staying in Pittsburgh.

Steelers Weighing Their Options

Pittsburgh’s approach to the running back position remains fluid. Khan has publicly emphasized the depth of this year’s draft class, particularly at running back, which could signal the team’s willingness to find a younger, more cost-effective replacement.

If Harris does hit the open market, he’ll be one of the top available running backs alongside Aaron Jones and J.K. Dobbins. His steady production and durability could attract suitors looking for a reliable workhorse back.

For now, the Steelers are keeping their options open—but whether Harris remains in black and gold next season is still to be determined.
