The Detroit Lions made a bold move at last year’s trade deadline, acquiring Za’Darius Smith from the Browns. But before that, they had their sights set even higher—on Myles Garrett. According to ESPN’s Kimberley Martin, Detroit was the most aggressive team inquiring about Garrett months before he requested a trade. Cleveland, however, had no interest in moving their superstar pass rusher.
While a Garrett trade seems even more unlikely now—especially with Aidan Hutchinson in line for a massive extension—the Lions are still focused on locking in key defensive pieces. Safety Kerby Joseph, who has expressed his desire to be a “life-long Lion,” could be next in line for a new deal. The team may also have Brian Branch on their extension radar down the road, meaning Detroit’s secondary could see some big contract decisions in the near future.
Meanwhile, across the NFC North, the Packers have a decision to make on linebacker Quay Walker’s fifth-year option, which could cost them $14.75 million. The Vikings, on the other hand, are weighing whether to re-sign Aaron Jones but would likely scale back his workload if he returns. With free agency approaching, all eyes are on how these teams shape their rosters for 2025.
