The One Free Agent Who Can Solve the Lions’ Biggest Offseason Need

The Detroit Lions are expected to prioritize their defense in free agency, and one under-the-radar name that could help is edge rusher Dennis Gardeck. While not the biggest name on the market, Gardeck has been a productive pass rusher for the Arizona Cardinals and could fill a key role in Detroit’s defense.

Gardeck, who broke out in 2021 with seven sacks on limited snaps, had his best season in 2023, logging 42 pressures and eight sacks. His ability to play as a hybrid edge rusher and SAM linebacker makes him a natural replacement for Derrick Barnes, who is set to hit free agency. The Lions need more depth at the position, especially after injuries derailed their defense last season.

At 30 years old and coming off a torn ACL, Gardeck may not have a strong market, which could make him a cost-effective option. Spotrac projects his contract to be around $5.2 million per year, a number that fits within Detroit’s cap space while allowing them to keep funds available for future extensions. Given GM Brad Holmes’ history of finding value in free agency, Gardeck could be an ideal target for the Lions.
