Mets Make Roster Move: Sean Reid-Foley Placed on Outright Waivers
A Surprising Roster Shake-Up in Queens
The New York Mets have placed right-hander Sean Reid-Foley on outright waivers, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. While this move doesn’t immediately remove him from the 40-man roster, it opens up the possibility of either clearing a roster spot or losing him to another team if he is claimed.
Reid-Foley has been with the Mets since 2021, following a trade from the Toronto Blue Jays, but injuries have prevented him from establishing a consistent role in the bullpen. Now, the Mets seem to be making a calculated decision regarding his future with the team.
Injury Struggles and Performance Flashes
Over the past seven seasons, Reid-Foley has shown flashes of potential but has struggled to stay healthy. Since his MLB debut in 2018, he has yet to throw more than 34 innings in a single season. Most recently, he was limited to just 21 2/3 innings in 2023 due to right shoulder impingements.
Despite the limited workload, he posted an impressive 1.66 ERA last season with a 27.8% strikeout rate. However, control issues have plagued him throughout his career, as evidenced by his 15.6% walk rate in 2023 and a career walk rate of 14.2%. His underlying numbers, including a 2.80 FIP and 3.98 SIERA, suggest his success last season may not have been sustainable.
What’s Next for Reid-Foley?
By placing him on outright waivers, the Mets are taking a risk. If Reid-Foley goes unclaimed, the team could attempt to keep him in their system while freeing up a roster spot. However, if another team sees value in his high strikeout rate and potential upside, they could claim him and add him to their own bullpen mix.
The Mets had agreed to a $800K arbitration contract with Reid-Foley this offseason, so if he clears waivers and is outrighted, he will have the option to elect free agency. However, with less than five years of service time, choosing free agency would mean forfeiting that salary.
Mets’ Roster Strategy Moving Forward
This move suggests the Mets are carefully managing their roster depth, possibly looking to clear space for another acquisition or a more reliable bullpen option. Given Reid-Foley’s history of injuries and control problems, the front office may have decided that his spot could be better utilized elsewhere.
The coming days will determine his fate—whether he remains in the Mets organization or finds a new home with another team willing to take a chance on his raw talent.
