Saints Cut Ties with Former Lions Fan Favorite & Record Holder

Jamaal Williams Cut by Saints, Ending His Short Stint in New Orleans
Jamaal Williams, a fan favorite during his time with the Lions, is now back on the free-agent market. The New Orleans Saints have officially released the veteran running back, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Williams was set to make $3.2 million this season, but after struggling over the past two years with the Saints, the team decided to move on. In his 27 games with New Orleans, he managed just 470 rushing yards, averaging 3.1 yards per carry, and scored two touchdowns.

Lions fans, of course, remember a very different version of Williams. He was a key part of Detroit’s offense in 2022, forming a dynamic duo with D’Andre Swift and breaking Barry Sanders’ single-season rushing touchdown record with 17 scores. His emotional, fiery personality—especially his Hard Knocks speech and postgame interview after beating the Packers—only made him more beloved.

Detroit wanted to keep him after that monster season, but contract talks didn’t work out. Williams called the offer “disrespectful” and signed a three-year, $12 million deal with the Saints. The Lions, meanwhile, quickly pivoted and brought in David Montgomery on a three-year, $18 million contract, a move that worked out in their favor.

Williams may be looking for a new team again, but his time in Detroit won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
