Detroit’s Free Agency Plan: Few Paths to Strengthening WR3

Lions’ Free Agency Preview: Who Fills the WR3 Spot in 2025?

With free agency around the corner, the Detroit Lions are searching for a reliable third wide receiver to complement Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams. Last season, Josh Reynolds’ departure left a hole that Donovan Peoples-Jones was expected to fill, but an underwhelming camp led the Lions to bring in veteran Tim Patrick. While Patrick contributed nearly 400 yards and three touchdowns, he lacked the playmaking ability Detroit lost with Reynolds.

Bringing Patrick back on a short-term deal could be an option, especially with new offensive coordinator John Morton—who worked with Patrick in Denver—now calling the shots. However, at 32, Patrick doesn’t offer long-term stability. The Lions could look to the draft for a younger receiver, but if they explore free agency, a few intriguing veteran options stand out.

Free Agent Targets

Nick Westbrook-Ikhine (Titans) offers a balance of size (6-foot-2, 211 pounds), versatility, and red-zone production, tallying 497 yards and nine touchdowns last season. Marquez Valdes-Scantling (Saints) brings a championship pedigree and deep-threat ability. Mike Williams (Steelers), when healthy, has the size and talent to be a difference-maker.

A longshot but intriguing option is DeAndre Hopkins, who proved with the Chiefs that he can still make plays. At 33, he’s not the typical WR3 prototype, but alongside St. Brown and Williams, he could be a savvy addition if the price is right. Another familiar face, D.J. Chark, could return on a team-friendly deal, but his injury history remains a concern.

What About Tight End?

Detroit’s tight end situation is stable with Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright under contract. The team could re-sign restricted free agent Shane Zylstra, but if they look outside, Hayden Hurst might be a solid depth option at a low cost.

With the legal tampering window opening soon, expect the Lions to explore their options carefully. Whether they go with a veteran or a young draft pick, filling the WR3 role will be key to keeping the offense firing on all cylinders.
