Shock Retirement: Bengals DE, Ex-Ohio State Standout, Calls It Quits

Sam Hubbard is retiring after seven seasons in the NFL, all with his hometown Cincinnati Bengals. The former Ohio State standout and key piece of the Bengals’ 2022 Super Bowl run announced that he’s stepping away from the game at just 29 years old.

Hubbard made his mark with clutch moments, including a record-setting 98-yard fumble return for a touchdown in a 2022 Wild Card win over Baltimore. He also delivered two critical sacks on Patrick Mahomes in the 2021 AFC Championship Game, helping Cincinnati reach the Super Bowl. Finishing his career with 398 tackles and 8.5 sacks, Hubbard leaves as a two-time Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year nominee. He plans to remain in Cincinnati with his fiancée, Jessica Koehler.
