Should the Lions Take a Chance on Joey Bosa?
The Detroit Lions need pass rush help, and with Joey Bosa hitting free agency, the question is: Should they go after him?
Bosa’s Availability and Injury History
The Los Angeles Chargers are cutting ties with Bosa to save over $25 million in cap space. At 29 years old, Bosa still has elite pass-rushing skills, but injuries have plagued him in recent years. He played just 14 games combined in 2022 and 2023, making him a risky investment.
Lions’ Defensive Struggles
Detroit’s defense struggled to generate consistent pressure last season. Aidan Hutchinson led the team with 7.5 sacks, but the Lions finished with just 37 total—ranking 23rd in the league. Their pass rush faltered in key moments, including their playoff loss to Washington, where they failed to sack Jayden Daniels despite generating 12 pressures.
Is Bosa the Right Fit?
While Bosa would add veteran experience, his recent durability issues make him a gamble. Detroit might be better off targeting other free agents like Josh Sweat or Malcolm Koonce, or looking to the 2025 NFL Draft, which has a deep class of pass rushers.
Bosa may also have interest in joining his younger brother Nick in San Francisco. For the Lions, a younger and more reliable option might be the smarter long-term move.
