Michigan State Moves Home Finale to Ford Field Again
For the second time in three seasons, Michigan State football is shifting its regular-season finale to Ford Field in Detroit. The Spartans announced that their Nov. 29 matchup against Maryland will take place in the home of the Detroit Lions instead of Spartan Stadium.
Why the Move?
Michigan State first moved a home game to Ford Field in 2023, when they played Penn State on Black Friday. The change was tied to the Big Ten’s new media rights deal, and while the atmosphere was strong with nearly 52,000 fans, the game itself was a disaster—MSU suffered a 42-0 loss and recorded just 53 yards of offense.
The decision to return to Ford Field likely stems from attendance struggles in recent years. Thanksgiving break often leaves Spartan Stadium emptier than usual, as seen last season when Michigan State lost 41-14 to Rutgers in front of a sparse home crowd.
A Boost for Detroit and Recruiting
Athletic director Alan Haller emphasized that Ford Field provides a “tremendous home-field advantage” and strengthens MSU’s connection to Detroit. Head coach Jonathan Smith also sees it as a great opportunity for his players to experience an NFL venue.
The move does come with some logistical challenges. The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) will again adjust its state championship football schedule, shifting games between Friday and Sunday to accommodate the Spartans.
Ticket sales for the game will be announced later. Michigan State is coming off a 5-7 season and will start spring practice on March 18.
