Pain Won’t Bench Him: Mets Star Fighting to Stay on Roster

Starling Marte has had a rough ride since signing with the Mets in 2021. Between losing his grandmother, battling migraines, dealing with groin injuries, and playing through a bone bruise in his knee, he’s been through the wringer. And yet, he’s not slowing down.

Despite still dealing with that nagging knee injury, Mets president David Stearns says Marte isn’t worried. “He told me, ‘I’ve played through pain my whole career. I’m used to it. I’ll keep going,’” Stearns shared.

Marte was a key part of the Mets’ playoff push last season, hitting .277 with four doubles and nine RBIs in 13 postseason games. The Royals showed some interest in him over the winter but balked at the Mets’ asking price of Hunter Harvey or Angel Zerpa.

Even if a trade doesn’t happen, the Mets are confident Marte can tough it out. “He’s had an offseason to recover, so we’ll see how things go in the next few weeks,” Stearns said.
