Carlton Davis Sets High Bar for Next Deal: ‘Not Settling for Less’

Carlton Davis Wants to Cash In – Will the Lions Pay Up?
Cornerback Carlton Davis III isn’t settling this time. After choosing familiarity over a bigger payday in 2022, the Detroit Lions’ veteran cornerback is heading into free agency determined to get what he’s worth.

“I want to be happy… but at this point in my career, I’m in my prime,” Davis told The Athletic’s Mike Silver. “To take less than I’m worth? I’d be doing myself and my family a disservice.”

What This Means for Detroit
Davis, who was traded to Detroit last offseason, played a key role in Aaron Glenn’s defense, matching up against top receivers in press coverage. However, a broken jaw ended his season early, exposing the Lions’ lack of veteran depth in the secondary.

With rookie corners Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. set to take on larger roles, Detroit could still use a seasoned corner to guide the young group. But will Brad Holmes be willing to pay Davis at the $19+ million per year range that top corners command?

Lions’ Likely Approach
Detroit has several needs to address in free agency, including edge rusher, defensive tackle, and offensive line. While retaining Davis would solidify the secondary, the Lions might explore cheaper veteran options or turn to the draft for additional help.

With free agency negotiations opening today, expect Davis to test the market and see if a team is willing to meet his demands. Whether he returns to Detroit depends on whether Holmes believes he’s worth the price.
