Lions Cut Ties with Za’Darius Smith in Expected Roster Move

Lions Cut Za’Darius Smith – But Is a Reunion Possible?
The Detroit Lions have made an expected cap-saving move, releasing veteran edge rusher Za’Darius Smith. The decision clears $5.7 million in cap space without leaving behind any dead money.

Smith was productive in Detroit, tallying 36 pressures and four sacks in just eight games after being acquired from Cleveland. However, his contract—loaded with void years and bonuses—made him a likely cut candidate.

Could Smith Return on a New Deal?
Smith’s farewell post on Instagram suggests he’s moving on, but a return at a lower price isn’t out of the question. The Lions still need pass-rushing help despite re-signing Marcus Davenport, and general manager Brad Holmes may look to bring Smith back on a more team-friendly contract.

With free agency set to begin, Detroit will explore its options—whether that’s re-signing Smith, adding another veteran, or targeting an edge rusher in the draft.
