Derrick Barnes Re-Signs with Lions, Eyes Unfinished Business
Instead of testing free agency, Derrick Barnes is staying in Detroit, signing a three-year contract extension with the Lions. For Barnes, the decision was easy.
“I just feel like there’s unfinished business here,” Barnes said after signing his deal. “My teammates, the coaches, the culture—we have something special.”
Drafted in 2021, Barnes has become a key part of the Lions’ defense. The versatile linebacker was primed for a big role last season before a knee injury ended his year in Week 3. In 2023, he put up 81 tackles, five tackles for loss, and five QB hits, proving his impact.
A major factor in his return? Kelvin Sheppard’s promotion to defensive coordinator. Barnes praised Sheppard’s passion and coaching style, saying, “He’s a guy anybody would want to play for.”
With Barnes, Alex Anzalone, and Jack Campbell all returning, Detroit’s linebacker unit remains intact—crucial for maintaining continuity under Sheppard’s system.
Back healthy and ready for the April 22 offseason program, Barnes believes the Lions have the pieces to dominate. “When we’re healthy, we’re unstoppable. We can beat any team in this league.”
