Khalil Mack Makes His Move—Detroit Lions Miss Out

The Detroit Lions’ hopes of signing veteran EDGE rusher Khalil Mack have been dashed. According to Ian Rapoport, Mack has decided to stay with the Los Angeles Chargers, agreeing to a 1-year, $18 million deal. The news comes as a blow to Lions fans who had hoped the 3-time All-Pro could help strengthen Detroit’s defense alongside Aidan Hutchinson.

With Mack off the market, the Lions will likely turn their attention to other options in free agency and the upcoming draft to address their pass-rushing needs. Despite having around $52 million in cap space, the Lions’ front office, led by GM Brad Holmes, is known for being strategic and conservative in their approach to big signings. It remains to be seen if Detroit will go after a more affordable pass-rusher or look to the draft for a future cornerstone.

Mack’s decision leaves the Lions needing to shift their focus quickly to other free agents or prospects who can help improve their defensive front in time for a 2025 playoff push.
