Lions Lose Ifeatu Melifonwu to Dolphins in Free Agency Shake-Up

Lions Lose DB Ifeatu Melifonwu to Dolphins in Free Agency
The Detroit Lions are parting ways with defensive back Ifeatu Melifonwu, as he has signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Miami Dolphins, per ESPN.

Melifonwu, a 2021 third-round pick, had an injury-plagued tenure in Detroit. Initially drafted as a cornerback, he later transitioned to safety. His breakout moment came in 2023, when he started the Lions’ final five regular-season games and all three playoff matchups, racking up 42 tackles, 5.0 sacks, eight passes defended, and two interceptions.

However, injuries derailed his momentum heading into 2024. He played just three games last season due to multiple stints on injured reserve, bringing his total appearances over four seasons to just 28 games. Given these durability concerns, Detroit appears to have opted for more reliability in the secondary.

The Lions’ safety group remains in decent shape with Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch as starters, along with young depth pieces Morice Norris, Loren Strickland, and Erick Hallett. However, they could still look to add a veteran with starting experience to reinforce the unit.

With Melifonwu now in Miami, Detroit continues shaping its roster for the 2025 season, balancing young talent with proven contributors.
