Dolphins Dive into Free Agency: Melifonwu Leaves Lions

The Detroit Lions are losing safety Ifeatu Melifonwu, their former third-round pick, to the Miami Dolphins. Melifonwu has agreed to terms with the Dolphins.

Melifonwu was selected by the Lions in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He played in 12 games as a rookie, starting 5, and recorded 33 tackles and 2 passes defensed.

The safety has struggled with injuries throughout his career, appearing in just 6 games in 2022. Despite his limited playing time, Melifonwu showed promise as a physical safety with ball-hawking skills.

The Dolphins are adding Melifonwu to their secondary, which also includes safety Jevon Holland and cornerback Xavien Howard. The team is looking to bolster its defense after finishing 11-6 and making the playoffs in 2022.

Terms of Melifonwu’s deal with the Dolphins have not been disclosed.
