Jets Unveil New Offensive Vision—And Justin Fields Is the Key

Aaron Glenn and Tanner Engstrand are putting their stamp on the New York Jets, and their first major move signals a clear shift in offensive philosophy. By acquiring Justin Fields on a two-year, $30 million guaranteed deal, the Jets left no doubt about the type of offense they intend to run in 2025 and beyond. Fields, one of the NFL’s most dynamic running quarterbacks, represents a stark contrast to the pocket-passing style Engstrand worked with in Detroit under Ben Johnson.

This move suggests the Jets are leaning toward a more mobile, RPO-heavy system rather than a direct copy of the Lions’ scheme. The team’s reported interest in Marcus Mariota—another dual-threat QB—further reinforces this vision. With Fields at the helm, expect more shotgun formations, designed rollouts, and a run-heavy attack featuring blocking tight ends and receivers to support a ground-based offense.

The Jets’ quarterback room now features Fields, Tyrod Taylor, Jordan Travis, and Adrian Martinez—each possessing mobility as a core trait. However, New York may not be done adding to the position. Alabama’s Jalen Milroe, a raw but explosive talent with a similar skill set to Fields, could be a prime target in the draft. By bringing in Fields now, the Jets have created a bridge for a future quarterback to develop under a system tailored for mobility and playmaking outside the pocket.

For the first time in years, the Jets seem to have a clear plan at quarterback—and they’re fully committing to it.
