Roy Lopez Signing Strengthens Lions’ Run Defense
The Detroit Lions have added depth to their defensive line by signing nose tackle Roy Lopez, a move that could take pressure off starter DJ Reader. Lopez, who started 16 games for the Arizona Cardinals last season, brings solid run-stuffing ability and experience to Detroit’s front.
While Reader is expected to remain the starter, Lopez’s presence allows the Lions to scale back his workload while also providing insurance if Alim McNeill isn’t ready at the start of the season. With Detroit now carrying eight interior defensive linemen, this signing likely signals the end of external additions at the position. However, with only a few players under contract beyond 2025, the Lions could still target defensive tackle depth in the draft.
