Detroit Lions Add Veteran QB Kyle Allen as Depth Behind Jared Goff
The Detroit Lions have bolstered their quarterback room, signing veteran Kyle Allen in free agency. After spending last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Allen now joins Detroit as the primary backup to Jared Goff.
Allen saw limited action in Pittsburgh, serving as a backup for most of the year and attempting just one pass—a 19-yard completion. Despite minimal playing time, his experience provides the Lions with a steady veteran presence behind Goff, especially as the team continues to develop 2023 third-round pick Hendon Hooker.
Detroit relied on veteran Teddy Bridgewater as insurance during last year’s playoff run, and Allen appears set to fill that role in 2025. While the Lions remain high on Hooker’s potential, adding an experienced QB ensures depth and stability as they prepare for another competitive season.
