Detroit Adds Experienced Blocker to Tight End Group
The Detroit Lions are bolstering their offense with the addition of a big-bodied tight end who brings both blocking skills and special teams experience.
Kenny Yeboah Joins the Lions on a One-Year Deal
According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the Lions have agreed to a one-year contract with tight end Kenny Yeboah, a former New York Jets player with four seasons of NFL experience.
Yeboah, who went undrafted in 2021 after playing college football at Temple and Ole Miss, has spent his entire professional career with the Jets. Over 33 games and two starts, he has logged nine career receptions for 111 yards and one touchdown. While his receiving stats may not jump off the page, he has made an impact as a blocking tight end, playing over 300 offensive snaps and contributing heavily on special teams.
A Much-Needed Addition to the Tight End Room
Standing 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, Yeboah fits the mold of a physical, in-line blocking tight end, which aligns with how the Jets primarily utilized him. In the 2023 season alone, 88 of his 106 offensive snaps were played as a traditional tight end rather than as a slot receiver or backfield option.
This signing comes at a crucial time for Detroit, as the team was thin at the tight end position behind rising star Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright. With James Mitchell joining the Carolina Panthers earlier this offseason and Shane Zylstra still unsigned, Yeboah provides immediate depth and versatility.
More Moves Could Be on the Way
While Yeboah’s primary role will likely be as a blocking tight end and special teams contributor, the Lions may not be done adding to the position. Expect Detroit to explore additional signings or even draft a tight end to round out the unit before the season begins.
For now, Yeboah brings toughness, experience, and reliability—qualities that could make him a valuable asset in Detroit’s offensive scheme.
