Lions projected $9 million free agent predicted to leave for Commanders

The Detroit Lions have been pretty good at keeping their homegrown talent, but there’s uncertainty about whether defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike will stick around. After a rough start to his NFL career with injuries and inconsistency, Onwuzurike bounced back big in 2024, having his best season yet. Now, he’s looking to cash in on his improved performance.

In a recent piece predicting where the top free agents might end up, Onwuzurike is projected to leave Detroit for the Washington Commanders. Washington had one of the worst run defenses in the NFL last season and needs to improve their interior. Onwuzurike would be a great fit, with his ability to play multiple positions and provide much-needed depth.

He posted 1.5 sacks and 45 pressures last season, plus a solid run defense grade of 64.1. The Commanders have already been active in free agency, beefing up their defensive line, and Onwuzurike could be the next piece. He’s expected to land a two-year, $9 million deal, which is affordable for Washington, who currently has $34.8 million in cap space.
