A Familiar Face Returns to San Francisco
In a surprising twist, Kyle Juszczyk is back with the San Francisco 49ers just days after his release. The nine-time Pro Bowl fullback, whose tenure with the team seemed to be over, has signed a two-year, $8 million deal to remain in the Bay Area.
The move comes as a reversal of what appeared to be a shift in the 49ers’ offensive philosophy, where Juszczyk’s role had been reduced with an increasing focus on dropback passing and 11-personnel formations.
A Cost-Effective Reunion
Juszczyk’s previous contract would have cost the 49ers $6.49 million against the 2025 salary cap, with void years extending through 2028. By re-signing him on a more team-friendly deal, the 49ers retain one of their most versatile offensive weapons without the financial strain.
While the Pittsburgh Steelers showed interest in Juszczyk and even hosted him for a visit, the 49ers ultimately acted quickly to bring him back. His return provides much-needed flexibility, allowing San Francisco to alternate between different personnel groupings without sacrificing offensive creativity.
A Role Reimagined?
With the signing of tight end Luke Farrell to a three-year, $20.25 million contract, Juszczyk had initially seemed like an odd man out. Last season, he found himself playing more as a tight end rather than his traditional fullback role, adapting to the team’s evolving offense.
Now, his return suggests that the 49ers see value in keeping his skill set in the mix. Farrell’s presence may relieve Juszczyk of some tight-end duties, enabling him to focus on the role that has made him a unique weapon in Kyle Shanahan’s offense.
Juszczyk’s Unfinished Business
At 33, Juszczyk remains confident in his ability to contribute at a high level.
“I know I’m not done,” he said after the 2024 season. “I’ve seen zero regression. I think especially, I mean, you can turn on the last two games and please show me where I’ve regressed, so I have no plans of stopping.”
The 49ers clearly share that belief. By bringing him back on a more manageable contract, they ensure that one of the league’s most dynamic fullbacks continues to be part of their plans.
For Juszczyk, this return isn’t just about staying with a familiar team—it’s about proving that he still has plenty left in the tank.
