The Detroit Lions made a major move in free agency, signing cornerback D.J. Reed to a three-year, $48 million deal. But it almost didn’t happen.
During his introductory press conference, Reed revealed that he was choosing between the Lions and the Washington Commanders. In the end, Detroit won out. “I wanted to get paid. I wanted to play with dogs,” Reed said. “I’m going to a great team and have a shot at that Lombardi.”
Reed brings toughness and proven production to the Lions’ secondary. He spent the last three seasons with the New York Jets, helping them maintain a top-four pass defense since 2022. Over 46 games, he racked up 220 tackles, 32 pass deflections, and two interceptions while consistently earning solid grades from Pro Football Focus.
The Lions needed a replacement after Carlton Davis signed with the Patriots, and they found a perfect fit. Reed describes himself as a scrappy, tenacious player who thrives in physical matchups—exactly the type of mentality Dan Campbell loves. His addition strengthens an already formidable secondary and helps the Lions take another step toward their Super Bowl aspirations.
