Detroit Lions Land One of Free Agency’s Best Bargain Deals

The Detroit Lions have one of the NFL’s most promising young rosters, but GM Brad Holmes hasn’t exactly gone on a spending spree this offseason. Outside of signing D.J. Reed to replace Carlton Davis at cornerback, Detroit has been pretty quiet in free agency.

That doesn’t mean they haven’t made smart moves, though. According to Tyler Brooke of The 33rd Team, one of the best “value” signings of free agency was the Lions bringing back defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike on a one-year, $3.5 million deal.

Onwuzurike, a second-round pick in 2021, didn’t see much action early in his career. But when injuries forced him into a bigger role last season, he took full advantage—racking up 47 pressures and becoming a key part of Detroit’s defense.

At 27, Onwuzurike has the potential to be a disruptive force on the interior line again in 2025. If he keeps trending upward, he could be in line for a major payday next offseason. Meanwhile, the Lions get a steal of a deal for a player who can help their already fierce defense dominate even more.
