Lions Left Out? Analyst Doesn’t See Detroit as Best Fit for Veteran Pass Rusher

The Detroit Lions still have work to do on their defensive front, particularly when it comes to adding a veteran pass rusher. Yet, despite their clear need, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell didn’t even list them as a potential fit for Matt Judon, one of the best remaining options in free agency.

Judon, a four-time Pro Bowler, is coming off an injury-shortened 2023 season but has a track record of consistent production. Between 2018 and 2022, he notched at least 20 quarterback hits each year, proving he can still be a force off the edge. Barnwell named the Chiefs, Bengals, and Commanders as logical landing spots for the 33-year-old, but Detroit’s absence from the list is puzzling.

Even if Judon isn’t the dominant pass rusher he once was, he could still provide valuable depth and mentorship. The Lions have opted to retain in-house talent like Marcus Davenport and Levi Onwuzurike, but relying on internal development alone is risky. Injuries derailed Detroit’s pass rush last season, and there’s no guarantee a rookie will be ready to contribute immediately.

Adding Judon—or another experienced edge rusher—would give the Lions a much-needed rotational piece who can generate pressure and stabilize their defense. If Detroit is serious about making a deep playoff run, bolstering the defensive line should be a priority.
