The Indianapolis Colts have made a move that’s got fans talking—signing quarterback Daniel Jones to a one-year, $14 million contract. ESPN’s Lindsey Thiry thinks this could be a sneaky good deal for Indy.
Jones, the former sixth-overall pick in 2019, is coming in to compete with Anthony Richardson for the starting job. After getting cut by the Giants and spending some time on Minnesota’s practice squad, he’s got a chance to prove himself again. If he steps up and either wins the job or pushes Richardson to improve, this signing could look like a bargain.
Some Colts fans weren’t thrilled about the price tag, but in today’s NFL, $14 million for a quarterback isn’t all that much.
Can Jones Turn His Career Around in Indianapolis?
A Rough Start in New York
Jones entered the league with high expectations after the Giants took him sixth overall in 2019. But so far, he hasn’t exactly lived up to the hype. He’s never made a Pro Bowl, and aside from a strong 2022 season—where he led the Giants to the playoffs—his career has been mostly underwhelming.
That 2022 campaign was his best, throwing for over 3,200 yards, running for another 700, and leading the Giants to a playoff win over the Vikings. Off that success, he landed a massive $160 million contract. But things quickly went south. He never got the Giants back to the playoffs, lost his starting job, and was eventually released.
After a short stint backing up Sam Darnold in Minnesota, he’s now hoping to revive his career in Indianapolis.
Could Jones Be the Colts’ Next Franchise QB?
Speaking of Darnold, his career turnaround could be an inspiration for Jones. Once labeled a bust, Darnold bounced around the league before putting it all together last year with the Vikings. That earned him a $100.5 million deal with the Seahawks this offseason.
The Colts are hoping Jones can do something similar. Richardson, the team’s young QB, has struggled to stay healthy and develop as a passer. If Jones beats him out and plays well, Indy might have found themselves a steal.
It’s a big “if,” but if Jones delivers, this one-year deal could end up being one of the best value signings of the offseason. Will “Danny Dimes” make the most of his fresh start? Colts fans will find out soon enough.
