The Alabama Crimson Tide’s secondary remains a significant concern heading into 2025, with key players like co-captain and safety Malachi Moore set to depart for the NFL Draft, along with cornerbacks Jahlil Hurley and DeVonta Smith. If cornerback Domani Jackson also declares for the NFL Draft, Alabama’s secondary will face even greater challenges next season.
To address these issues, Alabama has signed former Utah cornerback Cam Calhoun out of the transfer portal. Calhoun, a 6-foot, 180-pound defensive back, had an impressive 2024 season, totaling 21 tackles, nine pass breakups, and one interception. He was ranked as the No. 4 cornerback and No. 46 overall player in the transfer portal, according to 247 Sports. His strong stats suggest that quarterbacks tend to avoid throwing toward his coverage, showcasing his ability to lock down receivers.
Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack is excited about the addition of Calhoun, highlighting his experience and versatility. “He’s a guy that could play multiple positions, he can do a lot of different things, he’s shown physicality, he’s long and he looks like our guys,” Wommack said after the team’s practice on Friday. “Cam walked into the door with a mentality that he belonged at Alabama. Typically to me, those are the guys that’ll be successful here.”
Calhoun’s mindset and experience align with Wommack’s focus on finding players who not only have the talent but also the confidence to play at Alabama, which remains one of the premier programs in college football. While Alabama is not part of the 12-team College Football Playoff this year, the program continues to attract top talent like Calhoun, who is determined to prove he belongs on the field for the Crimson Tide.
