Detroit’s Underrated DT Projected to Deliver Beyond His Contract

Levi Onwuzurike’s one-year deal with the Detroit Lions is shaping up to be one of the biggest bargains of the offseason. Despite battling injuries early in his career, Onwuzurike proved to be a reliable force on the defensive line in 2024. Now, after re-signing with the Lions on a deal worth up to $5.5 million, he’s being projected as one of the top players likely to outperform his contract in 2025.

According to The Athletic’s Daniel Popper, Onwuzurike’s production in 2024—47 pressures and an 11.9% pass-rush win rate—was better than that of players who signed much bigger contracts this offseason. Compared to Tershawn Wharton and Javon Kinlaw, who each landed deals worth over $15 million annually, Onwuzurike’s return to Detroit on a lower-priced contract looks like a steal. While his raw stats (1.5 sacks, 13 QB hits, 28 tackles) weren’t eye-popping, his ability to generate pressure was undeniable. If he maintains that level of play in 2025, the Lions will be getting tremendous value for their investment.
