Lions Face Tough Call on Jameson Williams’ Future Amid Contract Talks

The Detroit Lions have had great success with their recent first-round draft picks, securing star players like edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson and running back Jahmyr Gibbs. However, the case of wide receiver Jameson Williams remains uncertain.

Williams, known for his speed, missed most of his rookie season while recovering from a torn ACL. Since then, he has shown glimpses of brilliance but has also faced challenges, including disciplinary issues both on and off the field. Now, with a contract extension decision looming as he enters the final year of his rookie deal, the Lions must decide how to handle his future. Some experts are urging the team to take a cautious approach.

Analysts Advise Caution on Williams’ Contract

According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the Lions would be wise to take their time before committing to a long-term deal with Williams. Birkett suggests the team should let the 2025 season play out before making any major financial decisions.

“No deal is imminent for Williams and the Lions, and there’s a case to be made the Lions should hold off on signing their young receiver to a big-money extension,” Birkett wrote. “But given Williams’ limited and questionable NFL track record so far, the most prudent approach from the team is to slow-play a new deal.”

Williams has steadily improved over his three seasons in Detroit. His 2024 campaign was his best yet, recording 58 receptions for 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns. However, concerns about his availability and discipline linger, as he has already served two suspensions—one for violating the NFL’s gambling policy and another for performance-enhancing substances.

Birkett believes the Lions have alternatives that allow them to keep Williams without making a long-term commitment just yet. They can exercise his fifth-year option for approximately $15.5 million and still have the option to apply the franchise tag in the future.

“Once that happens, they’ll control Williams’ rights through 2026 with the option to use the franchise tag on him beyond that,” Birkett noted. “Williams’ future should crystalize more in the next 12 months.”

Lions Could Explore Other Options in the Draft

While Detroit considers its approach with Williams, they also have the opportunity to add another dynamic wide receiver in the upcoming NFL Draft. Christian Booher of Sports Illustrated has suggested that Texas standout Matthew Golden could be a strong option if he’s still available when the Lions pick at No. 28 overall.

“He is incredibly fast, as evidenced by his 4.29 40-yard dash in Indianapolis. Additionally, he has exceptional footwork and can run any route within the route tree and has solid hands,” Booher wrote.

Golden’s versatility could also be a valuable asset, as he has the potential to contribute not only as a receiver but also on special teams.

“With some return ability also at his disposal, Golden could contribute at the NFL level in a number of ways,” Booher added. “If the Lions are looking to add another burner to their crop of wideouts, Golden is one of the best options available.”

The Lions have a big decision ahead regarding Williams. His potential is clear, but questions remain about his consistency and long-term value. By exercising patience, Detroit can evaluate his performance in 2025 before making a major financial commitment. Meanwhile, they have the option to strengthen their wide receiver corps through the draft.
