Lions TE Sam LaPorta Speaks Out on Ben Johnson’s Move to Chicago

Sam LaPorta on Ben Johnson’s Departure: ‘It Stings, But It’s Game On’

The Detroit Lions are heading into a new era on offense after losing their mastermind, Ben Johnson, to the Chicago Bears. Johnson, who helped craft one of the NFL’s most explosive offenses, took the Bears’ head coaching job this offseason, leaving behind a legacy of success in Detroit.

For tight end Sam LaPorta, Johnson’s departure is bittersweet. Drafted in 2023, LaPorta thrived under Johnson, setting a rookie record with 86 catches for 886 yards and 10 touchdowns. He kept the momentum going in his second season, proving he’s a key piece of the Lions’ offense.

Speaking with Kay Adams on the    Up and Adams   show, LaPorta shared his thoughts on losing his former coordinator.

      Mixed Emotions for LaPorta
“It definitely stings,” LaPorta admitted. “You put in so much work together, grinding every day, so it’s tough to see him go. But at the same time, it’s an exciting opportunity for him. And for us, it’s a fresh start with a new staff, which brings its own excitement.”

     From Friends to Rivals
With Johnson now leading a division rival, LaPorta knows their relationship will take a competitive turn when the Lions and Bears face off twice a year.

“I’m happy for Ben    he played a big role in my career,” LaPorta said. “But when we step on that field, it’s all business. Friends off the field, rivals on it.”

        Looking Ahead
Now under new offensive coordinator John Morton, LaPorta and the Lions are focused on keeping their offense at a high level. With the 2025 season approaching, he’s embracing the challenge and, of course, keeping an eye on those matchups against Chicago.
