Alexander Canario’s time with the New York Mets may be coming to an abrupt end. After being traded from the Chicago Cubs, the outfielder was hoping to make a strong enough impression in Spring Training to secure a spot on the Opening Day roster. However, despite hitting .306 in camp, he was unable to break through a crowded outfield group. Now, reports indicate that Canario will be removed from the Mets’ 40-man roster since he is out of minor league options. If the team cannot find a trade partner within the next five days, he will be placed on waivers and free to sign with any organization.
Canario’s path to this point has been anything but smooth. Originally acquired by the Cubs in the 2021 trade that sent Kris Bryant to the San Francisco Giants, he struggled to find consistent playing time in Chicago. Over two seasons, he appeared in just 21 games and logged 42 at-bats. His major league debut, however, was one to remember—he smashed a grand slam in his first-ever plate appearance against the Pittsburgh Pirates, a moment that briefly hinted at his offensive potential. Despite flashes of promise, opportunities remained scarce, and he eventually became the odd man out in the Cubs’ outfield picture.
New York seemed like a fresh start, but the situation didn’t improve much. With the Mets already carrying a deep group of major league outfielders, Canario’s chances were slim from the start. Even with a solid performance in spring training, it wasn’t enough to earn a roster spot. Because he cannot be sent down to the minors without first clearing waivers, his future is uncertain. If released, he could become a journeyman, bouncing between teams in search of a stable role.
Now, all eyes are on the next few days to see if a trade materializes or if Canario will hit the open market. Given his past flashes of power and offensive upside, he could be an intriguing pickup for a team looking to add outfield depth. Whether he finds a permanent home or continues to move around the league remains to be seen.
