A Day in New York Sports: The Hyped Mets and the Slumping Rangers

We’re in that sweet spot of the sports calendar where you can catch two different New York teams in action on the same day. On Wednesday, fans got to check out both the Mets and the Rangers within just a few hours of each other.

Let’s start with the Mets. They’ve kicked off their season with a ton of buzz, mainly because they snagged superstar Juan Soto from the Yankees. He’s only 12 games into a jaw-dropping 15-year, $765 million deal after smashing 41 homers last season in the Bronx. The Mets are off to a solid 8-4 start—not bad considering half those games were in cold New York and the other half in warmer spots like Miami and Houston. So far, their pitching’s been sharper than their bats.

The Mets are expected to battle it out with the Phillies and Braves for the NL East crown. Those two have pretty much owned the division recently, but the Mets have high hopes, especially with the hype building around them this year—big ticket sales, a packed first homestand, and even quirky stuff like a 5-borough mascot race.

As for Wednesday’s game? Kinda forgettable. Miami’s Max Meyer, a young gun on the mound, had the Mets no-hit into the sixth inning. The team only managed two hits all game, and Soto didn’t even get on base—a first this season. The game ended on a highlight-worthy catch by Dane Myers, who slammed into the fence to rob Pete Alonso. Tough way to lose your first home game.

Honestly, the most exciting moment of the day might’ve come before the first pitch. St. John’s basketball team, coming off their best season since 1985, got a shoutout. Star player Zuby Ejiofor tossed a perfect ceremonial first pitch, giving fans a little something to cheer for.
