Aaron Glenn on Why He Poached Tanner Engstrand from the Lions
When Aaron Glenn took over as head coach of the New York Jets, one of his first major moves was bringing Tanner Engstrand with him as the team’s new offensive coordinator. While Engstrand had been viewed as a potential OC candidate for the Detroit Lions, head coach Dan Campbell instead hired John Morton for the role, leading to Engstrand’s departure.
Speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine, Glenn explained why he made Engstrand a priority for his staff:
“Very, very smart. He was a huge part of that Detroit Lions offense. I know Ben Johnson got all the credit, but there were a number of people around him, including [Engstrand]. He’s paid his dues. He’s a hell of a coach. He’s going to do a good job for us here.”
Engstrand served as the passing game coordinator in Detroit and played a key role in the team’s offensive success. While some believed he should have been promoted within the Lions’ system, Glenn saw an opportunity to give him a bigger role in New York.
Did the Lions make the right call by hiring Morton over Engstrand? Time will tell, but both will now have the chance to prove themselves in their new roles.
