The Detroit Lions defense made strides in 2023, but there were still plenty of moments that left fans scratching their heads. While defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn has been a loyal voice on Dan Campbell’s staff, some around the league believe the unit may actually benefit from a fresh approach.
There’s a growing argument that Glenn’s departure—should it happen—could elevate the Lions’ defense to a new level. Despite his leadership and player support, his schemes have been criticized at times for being too conservative or predictable, particularly in coverage packages and late-game situations.
In recent offseasons, the Lions have heavily invested in defensive talent—Aidan Hutchinson has emerged as a force, and the team brought in key pieces in both the secondary and front seven. With this kind of talent on the roster, it may simply be time for a new voice to unlock their full potential. Someone more aggressive, innovative, or adaptable might be better suited to coordinate a defense expected to contend deep into the playoffs.
Of course, it’s not a guarantee that removing Glenn would be a cure-all. But if the Lions defense stalls again in 2025, the team might have to consider whether Glenn is truly the right leader to guide such a talented group.
With Detroit’s window wide open, standing pat might no longer be an option.
