AFC South Team Predicted to Scoop Up Former Lions Defensive End

Za’Darius Smith made a strong impression during his brief stint with the Detroit Lions, but it looks like his future could be heading elsewhere. The veteran defensive end, who joined the team midseason and helped anchor a defense hit hard by injuries—most notably the loss of Aidan Hutchinson—is now being linked to the Indianapolis Colts.

Detroit chose not to pick up Smith’s contract option for the 2025 season, largely due to financial constraints, though GM Brad Holmes has said the door isn’t completely closed and the team remains in contact with Smith’s agent. Still, with limited cap space and other priorities, it appears more likely Smith will move on.

According to a recent Bleacher Report analysis, Smith is seen as a strong fit for the Colts, who have bolstered their secondary but still need help on the edge after losing Dayo Odeyingbo to the Bears. Smith, 32, logged four sacks, three tackles for loss, and 10 QB hits in just eight games for Detroit and would likely provide an immediate impact for Indy.

Fans in Detroit were surprised when he was let go, especially after he embraced the city’s culture and quickly became a fan favorite. But with the Lions eyeing younger, long-term pieces, Smith might be set to continue his career in the AFC South.
