After Beating Chicago, Lions’ Ben Johnson Gives Eye-Opening Review of Caleb Williams

The Lions came out of Week 2 with a statement win over their longtime rivals, the Chicago Bears. But while Detroit fans are celebrating, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson had something interesting to say about Chicago’s rookie quarterback, Caleb Williams—and it wasn’t what most Bears fans expected after such a lopsided loss.

Williams, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, didn’t get the result he wanted on Sunday, as Detroit’s defense made life difficult for him all afternoon. Still, Johnson admitted after the game that he came away impressed with what the rookie was able to do under pressure. He pointed out Williams’ poise in the pocket, his ability to extend plays, and the flashes of special talent that could make him a problem for NFC North defenses in the future.

For Bears fans still reeling from the 52–21 defeat, Johnson’s words are a reminder that even in a loss, Chicago might have finally found its franchise quarterback. Detroit’s defense exposed the rookie at times, but the Lions’ coaching staff clearly sees enough in Williams to believe he’ll be dangerous once he gains more experience.

The Lions may have dominated the scoreboard, but Johnson’s comments served as a nod of respect—acknowledging that while Detroit is built to win now, the Bears might not be far behind if Williams develops the way many expect.
