Detroit Lions star Aidan Hutchinson is facing a tough reality his longtime teammate John Cominsky is hanging up his cleats for good.
Hutchinson, who joined the Lions in 2022 as the No. 2 overall pick, has played alongside Cominsky ever since. But that’s about to change. After missing the entire 2024 season with a torn MCL, Cominsky shocked fans and teammates by announcing his retirement from the NFL.
“After six years in the NFL, I am officially medically retiring,” Cominsky shared on Instagram. “I’m proud of my career, but the injuries have piled up, and it’s time to step away.”
He went on to thank the Lions for believing in him and reflected on how football shaped his life especially with the arrival of his two children, who he says helped push him to the finish line.
Hutchinson, who spent two seasons lining up next to Cominsky, made sure his teammate knew just how much he’d be missed, dropping a heartfelt comment on the retirement post: “Gonna miss ya dude.”
It’s been a rough stretch for the Lions’ defense. Hutchinson himself was sidelined for 12 games last season after breaking his tibia and fibula in a Week 6 game against the Cowboys. At the time, he was leading the league with 7.5 sacks.
As for Cominsky, he wraps up his NFL career with 107 total tackles, 7.5 sacks, six passes defended, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery over 57 games (including 20 starts).
The Lions will move forward without him, but it’s clear his impacton and off the field won’t be forgotten
