Alabama basketball star Mark Sears just landed a spot as one of the top five contenders for the Wooden Award, which is given to the best men’s college basketball player. Other finalists include Auburn’s Johni Broome, Florida’s Walter Clayton Jr., Duke’s Cooper Flagg, and Purdue’s Braden Smith, all of whom, like Sears, are Consensus First Team All-Americans.

Sears has had a standout season, earning a place on the All-SEC First Team and also being named a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award (best point guard) and a semifinalist for the Naismith Trophy (National Player of the Year). Coach Nate Oats believes Sears has made big strides this season, particularly in decision-making, leadership, and defense. He’s faced tougher defenses than last year but has kept his performance high, and Oats is hopeful he’ll make it to the NBA.

In other news, Alabama assistant coach Kelly Curry has been inducted into the A STEP UP Assistant Coaches Hall of Fame, marking a big career achievement after his 12 years with the women’s basketball team. On the transfer front, former Alabama guard Davin Cosby is heading to Kennesaw State to play for coach Antoine Pettway. Additionally, football receiver Isaiah Horton, who transferred from Miami, is embracing Alabama’s strong football culture.

In women’s basketball, guards Sarah Ashlee Barker and Aaliyah Nye are leaving the program after solid performances this season. And in softball, Kali Heivilin earned a spot as the fourth-best second baseman in the country.

Today’s highlight: Alabama men’s tennis faces Auburn at 6 p.m. CT.

Also, don’t forget, the 2025 football season opener is just 140 days away!
