Alabama’s quarterback job is wide open after Jalen Milroe heads to the NFL, and spring practices are showing some serious competition. Pete Nakos from On3 reports that while no one has locked down the job yet, Austin Mack is making a strong case as a serious contender.Ty Simpson and Keelon Russell are also in the mix, trying to claim the starting spot.

Mack, who transferred from Washington, seems to be finding his stride. Sources say he had one of his best practices on Tuesday, and his familiarity with Kalen DeBoer’s system gives him an edge. Despite Mack turning heads, Simpson is still in the fight for the position.

Mack was a four-star recruit in the 2023 class and ranked as the No. 16 QB in the On3 Industry Rankings. He played just one game for Alabama in 2024 but made the most of it, completing 2 of 3 passes for 39 yards and a touchdown against Mercer. Alabama will kick off its 2025 season on August 30 against Florida State.

It’s still anyone’s game for the QB job, but Mack’s looking like a serious contender.
