The Cowboys and Micah Parsons are working on a contract extension, but they’re not there just yet. Team owner Jerry Jones has been personally handling negotiations with Parsons, and while they’ve agreed on most things, some details still need ironing out.
“I’ve spent hours talking with Micah,” Jones said. “We’re on the same page about a lot, but we don’t have a deal yet. He’s still under contract for now, so we’ll see how things go.”
The big topics in these discussions? Money, contract terms, and guarantees. Jones believes that having a direct line of communication with Parsons—without an agent in the middle—is the best way to make progress.
“I’m the one writing the check, and he’s the one agreeing to it. It’s just easier this way,” Jones explained.
No Rush, No Pressure
Some people think waiting on the deal will only make Parsons more expensive, especially after other star pass rushers like Myles Garrett signed new contracts. But Jones isn’t sweating it.
“I don’t see this as urgent at all,” Jones said. “Some think signing early saves money, but rushing into deals can lead to mistakes. I’d rather pay more later and get it right.”
The Cowboys also have other contract extensions to think about, including players like DaRon Bland and Tyler Smith. But Parsons’ deal isn’t holding up anything else.
“We’ve got options, even if we have to go the franchise tag route,” Jones said. “This deal isn’t make-or-break for our salary cap situation.”
Leadership Matters
Jones made it clear that Parsons isn’t just getting paid for his skills—he needs to step up as a leader, too.
“For Micah to get the kind of contract he wants, he has to be the kind of leader the Cowboys need,” Jones said. “He’s got the talent and the mentality, but he has to take that next step.”
So, will a deal get done soon? Maybe. Maybe not. Jones says talks with Parsons are further along than they were with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb last year, but that doesn’t mean an agreement is coming tomorrow.
“We’re having good discussions, but there’s no deadline,” Jones said. “Micah’s still under contract, and we’ll keep working through it.”
One thing’s for sure—when the deal does happen, it’ll be on Jerry Jones’ terms.
