Analyst Predicts 18-Game NFL Season Is On the Horizon

The idea of expanding the NFL regular season to 18 games is increasingly being seen as inevitable, though not immediate. CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reports that while the topic wasn’t discussed during the league’s recent meetings, the addition of a 18th game feels like “a fait accompli” according to several sources. The NFL would need to negotiate the change with the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), which could take time, but it seems likely to happen after 2027.

Logistically, the season could be extended by removing one preseason game and starting the regular season on Labor Day weekend, with teams possibly receiving a second bye week. One key proposal includes aligning the Super Bowl with Presidents Day weekend. While the change would increase profits for team owners, it also raises concerns about player health and safety, a topic of major debate, especially as the NFLPA has long argued for shorter offseason schedules.

In other Lions news, newly signed defensive back D.J. Reed is hosting his first football camp on May 3, inviting young athletes to register and join in on the excitement. Meanwhile, Lions players, including Jameson Williams, continue to stay active in supporting Detroit sports.
