Analysts Urge Lions to Land Coveted $36M Cornerback

The Detroit Lions have a big decision to make in their secondary this offseason, and one analyst believes they should target veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas.

With Carlton Davis set to hit free agency, the Lions could have a major hole to fill at the top of their cornerback depth chart. According to SI.com’s Vito Chirco, Douglas could be a strong replacement. The 29-year-old has been a key contributor since joining the Buffalo Bills in a midseason trade from Green Bay in 2023, helping lead their defense to an AFC Championship appearance.

“If Detroit opts to go the free-agency route to address the position, Rasul Douglas is a player worth looking into,” Chirco wrote. “In 24 games with the Bills, he logged 87 total tackles, 13 passes defensed, four interceptions, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble, and a sack.”

Douglas has had moments of inconsistency, earning a 58.9 coverage grade from Pro Football Focus last season, but his playmaking ability stands out. Spotrac projects his next contract to be around three years, $36 million—an investment that could bolster Detroit’s secondary without breaking the bank.

Meanwhile, Davis has hinted that he won’t be taking a discount to return. The Lions acquired him in a trade with Tampa Bay last year, but after dealing with injuries—including a broken jaw and thumb—he may be looking for a bigger payday elsewhere.

With other defensive needs to address, including improving their pass rush behind Aidan Hutchinson, the Lions will need to carefully allocate their resources. Whether that includes making a move for Douglas remains to be seen.
