Recent reports suggest that Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney II favors retaining veteran quarterback Russell Wilson over Justin Fields for the upcoming season. This preference could significantly impact the team’s quarterback plans.
NFL insider Mark Kaboly discussed this development on his “Kaboly + Mack” podcast, indicating that Rooney’s inclination toward Wilson stems from a belief that the seasoned quarterback offers the best chance for immediate success. Kaboly noted, “I think Art thinks 10 wins, add a piece here or there, and Russell gives you the best opportunity to win this year.”
The Steelers concluded the previous season with a 10-7 record, experiencing a late-season decline that culminated in a Wild Card Round loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Wilson, 36, led the team to a 6-1 start upon returning from injury, while Fields, 25, achieved a 4-2 record during his tenure as the starter.
Financial considerations also play a role in this decision. Fields, entering free agency, is expected to attract significant interest, potentially driving up his market value. In contrast, Wilson’s age and recent performance may make him a more affordable option for the Steelers. Kaboly highlighted this aspect, suggesting that Rooney’s preference might be influenced by the financial implications of retaining each player.
While Rooney typically values input from his coaching staff and front office, his reported preference for Wilson could be decisive. As Kaboly remarked, “If the owner says jump, they’re gonna jump.”
