Now, Lions insider Tim Twentyman is pointing to Maddox as the kind of depth piece that might change everything. A former Eagles starter and Super Bowl LIX champion, Maddox is slotted in as the backup nickel and No. 3 safety. But with his experience and versatility, he’s much more than just a reserve.
> “It’s a veteran (secondary) group with versatility and experience,” Twentyman noted. “It’s one of the position groups I expect to see big gains from in 2025.”
Maddox, 28, brings a scrappy edge to the Lions’ defense. Despite standing just 5’9”, he’s never backed down from a challenge. He broke up five passes last year in limited snaps and had his best year in 2021 with 73 tackles and two forced fumbles.
With DJ Reed, Terrion Arnold, and Robertson expected to start, Maddox provides a much-needed insurance policy—a guy who’s been in big games and knows how to hold the line when the lights are bright.
Detroit didn’t make headlines with splashy free-agent signings, but if this team stays healthy—and Maddox is called into action when needed—this underrated move could end up being one of Brad Holmes’ smartest decisions yet.
