After being designated for assignment by the Detroit Tigers and electing free agency last week, left-handed reliever Matt Gage has quickly found a new opportunity. The 32-year-old has signed a minor league deal with the San Francisco Giants and was assigned to their Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento, according to MiLB.com’s transaction log.
The Giants are a familiar organization for Gage, who was originally selected by them in the 10th round of the 2014 MLB Draft. He spent more than three seasons in their farm system before being released in 2018.
Gage joined the Tigers in December 2024 on a minor league contract and began this season at Triple-A Toledo, where he impressed with a 1.67 ERA in 23 relief appearances. Detroit promoted him to the majors on June 12, but he lasted just two weeks before being replaced on the roster. In his brief stint with the Tigers, Gage pitched 5.2 scoreless innings across six appearances, giving up seven hits and two walks while striking out three.
Despite posting a perfect ERA during his time in Detroit, opponents batted .304 against him with a .350 BABIP. Now back with the Giants organization, Gage will look to work his way back to the majors.
