It looks like the Patriots’ hopes of landing Abdul Carter in the draft might be slipping away.
With the Giants seemingly out of the quarterback hunt at No. 3, it looked like New England had a real shot at either Penn State’s pass-rushing beast Abdul Carter or Colorado’s versatile star Travis Hunter at No. 4. But that all depended on the Browns grabbing QB Shedeur Sanders at No. 2.
Now, according to Adam Schefter, Cleveland is leaning toward taking Carter instead. If the Giants go for Hunter right after, the Patriots could be left without either of their top defensive targets.
Carter would have been a dream fit for New England a plug-and-play pass rusher with elite athleticism and run-stopping ability. While the Patriots have invested in their defensive front, adding Carter could’ve taken them to another level.
If Carter is off the board, the Pats may need to pivot. They could go for a top wide receiver like Arizona’s Tetairoa McMillan or bolster the O-line with LSU’s Will Campbell or Missouri’s Armand Membou. Either way, unless the Browns shock everyone and take a QB, New England will have to rethink its draft strategy.
